LIFEGUARD CERTIFICATION CLASSES

This certification course gives participants the skills and knowledge needed to be lifeguards in the pool. It offers up-to-date information on how to guard, anticipate and prevent problems and take action to help those in danger. It also covers safety and survival skills every swimmer needs to know, accident prevention, guarding techniques, emergency systems, rescue skills and first aid in aquatic environments.

With a lifeguarding certification, you can also become a swimming instructor or coach, as well as a lifeguard at the YMCA!

Participants will receive a Lifeguard hip pack including an adult and infant CPR mask and a whistle to be used in class.

Class will consist of 7 hours of online work and 22 hours in-person class

Age Requirement

  • Minimum Age: You must turn 15 years old on or before the last day of the RED Cross Lifeguarding course

Prerequisite 1: Swim-Tread-Swim Sequence

You must complete a continuous 200-yard sequence without stopping to rest: 

  • Swim 150 yards: Jump in and swim 150 yards using the front crawl (freestyle), breaststroke, or a combination of both. (Side-swimming and back-swimming are not permitted; goggles are allowed).
  • Tread water for 2 minutes: Immediately after the swim, maintain your position at the surface for 2 minutes using only your legs. Your hands must be placed tucked under your armpits.
  • Swim 50 yards: Immediately following treading water, swim 50 more yards using the front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination. 

Prerequisite 2: Timed Brick Retrieval

You must complete a timed event within 1 minute and 40 seconds without using goggles: 

  • Swim 20 yards: Start in the water and swim 20 yards to reach the deep end (depth of 7 to 10 feet).
  • Submerge and retrieve: Surface dive (feet-first or head-first) to retrieve a 10-pound object/brick from the bottom.
  • Return on back: Resurface and swim 20 yards on your back to the starting point, holding the brick with both hands and keeping your face at or near the surface to breathe.
  • Exit: Place the object on the deck and exit the water without using a ladder or steps.
